Greek Easter services live on C44

C44 will again be broadcasting Greek Easter services live, enabling congregations to watch services live from the beautiful St George Greek Orthodox Church in Thebarton. See below for broadcast times of the services and rescheduled programs.

Palm Sunday

Sunday 17 April from 08:00 am

The feast of Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem, Palm Sunday, is one of the twelve major feasts of the Church. All hymns through this service continue to glorify Christ’s triumphal manifestation ‘six days before Passover’ when he will give himself at the Last Supper and on the Cross for the life of the world.

The twelve Gospel readings of Christ’s passion

Thursday 21 April from 07:00 pm

The twelve Gospel readings of Christ’s passion are placed between the various parts of the service. The hymnology is all related to the sufferings of the Saviour and borrows heavily from the Bible. The Lord’s beatitudes are added to the service after the sixth gospel reading, with special emphasis given to the salvation of the thief who acknowledged Christ’s Kingdom. The final gospel tells of the sealing of the tomb and the setting of the watch. Matthew 27:62-66

Vespers of Good Friday

Friday 22 April from 03:00 pm

Vespers of Good Friday, the descent of the Lord from the Holy Cross. Usually celebrated mid-afternoon to commemorate the burial of Christ, the Lord is taken down from the Holy Cross and placed onto the Holy Altar during the Gospel reading. The priest incenses the Epitaphios, then circles the altar table with the Epitaphios carried above his head and places it in the tomb for veneration by the faithful.

Matins of Holy Saturday

Friday 22 April from 07:00 pm

Hymns and Myrrh is proper for the dead. Verses are sung, the priest censes the tomb of the Saviour who then leads the procession of the Epitaphios around the outside of the church followed by the congregation. This procession bears witness to the total victory of Christ over the powers of darkness and death. The whole universe is cleansed, redeemed and restored by the entrance of the Life of the World in to death.

Matins of the Resurrection

Saturday 23 April from 11:00 pm

Come and receive light from the unwaining Light; and glorify Christ, who has risen from the dead. Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered; let those who hate him flee from before his face! Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life. This is the day which the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it!
