The Treehouse Comedy Festival will leaf you in stitches

The inaugural Treehouse Comedy Festival will see two of Adelaide’s brightest comedians film their first comedy specials.

Russell Hartup and JP Picken will go out on a limb in front of a treehouse-inspired stage to film their stand-up specials, which will air on Channel 44 in 2022! The mini-festival’s director, Adelaide comedy veteran Jason Chong, hopes this can become an annual tradition for Adelaide artists.

“Once the Fringe is over, artists have to chop down the show they worked so hard on and start all over again on next year’s seedlings. I wanted to create a space where Adelaide performers can have their Fringe shows professionally filmed—by banding together and pooling their resources—and end up with something they can show forever. This festival is as DIY as a backyard tree house, with plenty of good times… but hopefully less splinters,” he says.

The Treehouse is in Adelaide’s newest comedy club Laugh Lounge in Lindes Lane (just off Rundle Mall), which will become a pop-up TV studio, complete with a two-metre-high origami tree!

Russell Hartup began his comedy career a decade ago after his wife secretly signed him up for an open mic night. Since then, he has performed in five Fringes, was named one of “Five Funny Fringe Shows You Must See” (Glam Adelaide) and reviewers said, “you will leave filled with joy” (Channel 44). This year’s show The Rule of 3 enjoyed a sold-out season.

JP Picken also enjoyed a sell-out Fringe season this year, as he branched out with debut show Normal people are just people you don’t know that well, after learning his craft on stages in Adelaide, England and even Iceland! His show delves into the dark depths of JP’s bizarre personality and uncovers hilarious anecdotes from a mind that is far from ‘normal’!

With only 50 people in the audience for each show, tickets will be snapped up quick.

The Treehouse Comedy Festival wood like to acknowledge generous support from the Adelaide Fringe, City of Adelaide and Expressions Adelaide’s creative business incubator Vaulting Ambitions, and Channel 44.
